It is the annual plant in the nightshade plants (Solanaceae) family. It is grown for starchy tubers. Potato is served as a whole and mashed in cooked vegetables. 

History of potato

The potato originated in South America - Chilli or Pera. The local environment is very favorable growth of potatoes. There are wide wild varieties of potatoes found in these regions.

The tubers are highly digestive with contents of vitamin C, protein, thiamine, and niacin.

Naturally, potatoes have tetra chromosome structures present 2n. First of all, Spain is the country in which potatoes are distributed in the world. 


Potato cultivated region:

In the World: (USSR) Russia, France, America, Germany, England, etc.

In Asia: China and India are the largest Potato cultivation areas.

In India: It is cultivated in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttrakhand, Bihar, etc.


Botanical Characters of Potato

Potato is an annual herb.

Height = 2 to 3 Feet.

The stem is Arial.

Erect and difference in nodes or internodes.

A large part of the stem behaves as stolen.

Leaves: Alternate orientation, length of the leaf is 20 to 40 cm, and large lamella is present.

The underground modified stem is modified into a tube.

Sometimes these stems increase in size and are stored as food material.
